How to Cut Your Heating Bill

Winter is almost upon us and for many that means an entire season of high heating bills.  According to KCPL, 45% of your home’s energy costs are generated by heating and cooling.  For those who want to save some money and be a little greener, it’s time to get back to the basics of proper air management.  Air management starts with the thermostat.  To balance comfort and efficiency, KCPL recommends the thermostat be set in the range of 68-70 degrees.  Slight temperature adjustments can go a long way.  The Department of Energy says that by lowering your thermostat by just one degree you can save $40.  It’s important to remember that this comfort setting is for when you are up and about in your house.  While at work or sleeping, the temperature can be set even lower to save even more money.  This is also why a programmable thermostat is a wise investment for the long run.

With the thermostat correctly set, some basic air management tips will increase your heating efficiency.  First, the sun is your ally.  During the day leave the blinds open to let the warmth of the sun in.  At night, close them to keep that heat contained.  Second, make sure no items block air flow from vents or ducts.  And finally, take advantage of your ceiling fan.  In the winter, reversing your ceiling fan will push warm air down.

These simple steps will make a noticeable difference in your heating bill and help you live a little greener.  You can easily recoup the purchase price of a programmable thermostat within the first year.
