The Greenest Sports Stadium

The MLB’s All-Star break is here and we think this the perfect opportunity to do a “light and fun” article on the greenest sports stadium in America. A few months ago, MSN Green published an article on the 10 greenest sports stadiums. Topping the list was Citi Field, the New York Mets brand new ballpark.
Citi Field secured top ranking because engineers and stadium officials implemented several environmentally-conscious programs during pre- and post-construction. To reduce landfill waste and energy consumption, the use of recycled materials was integrated throughout the construction process. For instance, approximately 95% of the 12,500 tons of steel used to construct the stadium was made from recycled steel. The temporary surface built to support the cranes was made from recycled concrete and brick. The builders also used ash and other waste materials from a nearby coal-burning power plant to mix with the concrete pouring for the foundation. This program alone saved 2 million pounds of coal-combustion waste from going to the landfill and reduced the quantities needed for newly manufactured cement.
The Mets Organization also joined the Energy Star Program to encourage energy efficiency and conservation. The field has state-of-the-art lighting on timers that will automatically control all of the light fixtures, the 800 televisions and numerous ad panels around the park. Even the bathrooms are high-tech. Filled with low-flow features, the 414 hands-free faucets, 635 automated toilets and 207 waterless urinals will save more than 4 million gallons of water a year.
Citi Field’s Environmental Program extends to beyond the game event. The stadium complex has organized waste recycling programs and delivers left-over food to help the needy in New York City.
