Our individual actions matter and have an impact on our environment.  When a large entity like the United States Postal Service enacts changes to their policies to benefit the environment, the impact can be tremendous.  Listed below are a few of the environmental initiatives undertaken by the USPS.

The Postal Service has the largest civilian vehicle fleet in the nation and over 43,000 of them are alternative-fuel capable.  Since the USPS primarily refuels at commercial stations, their fleet generates greater demand for alternative fuels nationwide.

The USPS has partnered with Cradle to Cradle and re-engineered its product line.  Their products are more than just recyclable.  From the design to manufacturing to distribution, the USPS strives to conserve water and energy.  This translates into a half billion Priority Mail and Express Mail packages and envelopes meeting higher environmental standards and more than 15,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions prevented each year.

Every year the USPS recycles one million tons of waste, which generates $7.5 million in additional revenue.  They also generate greater demand for recycled materials as every year the USPS purchases $200 million worth of product that contains recycled content.
